Chinchero Town – Sacred Valley – Maras Salt Mines
We begin the Super Sacred Valley VIP tour with hotel pickup at 6:30 a.m. in our comfortable tourist bus. We then head north, exploring the majesty of the Sacred Valley of the Incas.
Chinchero
After approximately 40 minutes from Cusco, we arrive at the town of Chinchero around 7:30 a.m. This place preserves many Inca traditions and is well known for its agricultural activity. During the visit, you will admire the colonial church and tower, built on top of ancient Inca temples. You will also have the opportunity to see local artisans working on traditional textiles, using ancestral techniques passed down through generations.
Moray and Maras Salt Mines
Continuing to Moray at 9:30 a.m., we explore an impressive set of circular terraces built into natural depressions in the land. These structures were used by the Incas to create microclimates and experiment with different crops, demonstrating remarkable agricultural and scientific knowledge.
Around 11:00 a.m., we arrive at the Maras Salt Mines, a complex of more than 3,000 salt pools used since pre-Inca times. Each pool is managed by local families, preserving the traditional salt extraction process using natural spring water from the Qoripukiu mountain (“source of gold” in Quechua). The contrast between the white salt and the surrounding mountains creates an unforgettable landscape.
Lunch and Ollantaytambo
At 12:30 p.m., we stop in Urubamba to enjoy a buffet lunch with fresh local products—perfect for resting and tasting the flavors of the Sacred Valley.
Then, at 2:00 p.m., we head to the Ollantaytambo archaeological complex, a strategic site during Inca times. This center served administrative, military, social, and economic functions. Its architecture, featuring massive perfectly fitted stone blocks, reflects the high level of engineering achieved by the Incas.
Pisaq
At 4:00 p.m., we visit Pisaq, whose name means “partridge” in Quechua. Here, you will see a system of agricultural terraces and irrigation channels that allowed the cultivation of the famous giant white corn, “parcay sara.” You can also distinguish the urban, religious, and social sectors of the Inca settlement. There will be time to explore the Pisaq market, where local products and handicrafts are sold—perfect for taking home authentic souvenirs from the Sacred Valley.
Finally, we return to Cusco, arriving at approximately 7:00 p.m.
