Short Inca Trail to Machu Picchu Itinerary: 2 Days / 1 Night with Hotel

Experience the unique adventure of the Short Inca Trail and discover the majesty of Machu Picchu in just 2 days and 1 night. This itinerary combines adventure, history, and nature, with all the comforts included: transportation, meals, and accommodation in Aguas Calientes.

Day 1: Cusco – Ollantaytambo – Km 104 – Wiñayhuayna – Aguas Calientes

4:00 a.m.: Hotel pick-up in Cusco
Your adventure begins very early. Our team will pick you up from your hotel in Cusco and take you to the Inca Rail or Peru Rail office to start the tourist transfer to the train station in Ollantaytambo, a journey of approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes.

6:40 a.m.: Train to Km 104 (Chachabamba)
From Ollantaytambo, we’ll take the train to Km 104, the official starting point of the Inca Trail. Here, permits are checked, and your hike begins.

Hike to Wiñayhuayna (approx. 3 hours)

Enjoy a route filled with stunning Andean landscapes, crystal-clear waterfalls, and lush flora as you approach Wiñayhuayna (2,650 m / 8,694 ft), one of the best-preserved ruins on the Inca Trail. This site features terraced stairways, sacred fountains, and Inca architecture—perfect for exploring and taking unforgettable photos.

Lunch and hike to Machu Picchu (2 hours)
After a well-deserved lunch, continue hiking for about 2 hours to the Sun Gate (Inti Punku). From this viewpoint, you’ll have your first encounter with Machu Picchu, where you can capture panoramic photos of the citadel and hear explanations from our expert guide about its history and culture.

Descent to Aguas Calientes (50 minutes)
After the visit, we’ll take the bus down to Aguas Calientes, where you’ll spend the night in a comfortable hotel, enjoying the tranquility of the town at the foot of the mountain.

Day 2: Aguas Calientes – Machu Picchu – Ollantaytambo – Cusco

Start your day with energy before your second visit to Machu Picchu.

Bus up to Machu Picchu (approx. 30 minutes)
Return to the citadel and get ready to explore one of the world’s greatest archaeological treasures. Our guide will take you through the city for approximately 2 hours, sharing insights about its history, architecture, and Inca secrets.

Free time to explore
After the guided tour, you’ll have free time to explore Machu Picchu at your own pace, take photos, and enjoy the majesty of the site.

Optional: Huayna Picchu climb

If you wish, check availability to climb Huayna Picchu, an additional challenge with about 1 hour ascent and 1 hour descent, offering spectacular views of the entire citadel.

Return to Cusco
After your visit, we’ll return to Aguas Calientes to take the train back to Ollantaytambo and then private transport back to Cusco, concluding your unforgettable experience.
